G. Elphinstone Dalrymple

1826 1876

Noted North Queensland explorer, pastoralist, public servant and politician

Erecterd by Dalrymple Shire Council, Charters Towers, Queensland, 1986.

The headstone was erected to memorialise the life and work of G. Elphinstone Dalrymple

G. Elphinstone Dalrymple made a significant contribution to this part of Queensland in terms of his work as an explorer and as the first land commissioner.

His name was dished [sic] out a number of times by the then Dalrymple Shire Council in the 1970-2000 period to honour his work.

The key proponent of this activity was the then shire council's mayor Peter Black.

It would have been Peter Black who was responsible for the erection of the headstone at Hastings.  I believe he visited the site.  [Michael Brumby, Community Historian - Charters Towers And Dalrymple Archives Group
