Frederick Toogood was born in Wingham, Kent in 1857.  His wife Mary came from Dorset.  In 1901 he was working as a baker and living at 14 Whitefriars Road with his wife and five children, including Charles who was born in Hastings in 1897.

By 1911 the family had moved to 10 Newgate Road, St Leonards.

Frederick was still a baker, and there were now six children.  One of his sons was a baker, another a tram car conductor and Charles, at 14, was a newsboy at the station.

At the time of Charles’s death they were living at 44 Cornfield Terrace.

Charles volunteered for the army, enlisting in Hastings and became a private in the 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment.  He was killed in action on 13th October 1915 at the age of 19, presumably at the Battle of Loos in which his Battalion was taking part. He is remembered on the Loos Memorial.
