Death of Sir Patrick Craigie.—We regret to announce the death, in his 80th year, of General Sir Patrick Edmonstone Craigie, K.G.8., Saturday, at his residence, 8 Warrior Terrace…

He was educated at Glasgow school and College, entered the Army ; became Lieutenant 1814, Captain 1821, Major 1826, Lieut. Colonel 1834, Colonel 1842, Major-General 1854, Colonel 55th Foot, Lieut.-General 1842, General 1868.


The deceased general had seen much active service in different parts of the world.  Sir Patrick Craigie, who was knighted in 1867, was twice married ; first in to Bell, daughter of Henry Williams, Esq., of Falmouth and secondly, in 1838, to Marv Jane, eldest daughter of General Trewman, of the Madras Army.

General Sir Patrick Craigie was the son of Mr. Laurence and Margaret (Hall)Craigie. He was educated at Glasgow School and College and entered the army in 1813, being in his 18th year.  He obtained his first commission as ensign June 3, 1813.

He saw much active service during his career, in Holland, China and India.  He was promoted to Colonel, appointed an aide-de-camp to the Queen, and a Companion of the Order of the Bath.  on leaving India in 1860 he received the thanks of the governor in council at Madras, and of the Commander-in-Chief, for his conduct in that command; appointed Colonel 31st foot 1859, and of the 55th foot, 1862; promoted to be Lieut. General 1860, and General in 1868.

 Sir Patrick was twice married, first to Bell (Williams) Belle was the daughter of Mr. Henry and Fanny (Bell) Williams of Falmouth, Cornwall. She married Patrick Craigie 11 Dec. 1827, in Falmouth, Cornwall.  She died 12th June 1833 in Madras, India and is buried in the Church of England Cemetery, Bellary District.  Secondly to Mary Jane (Trewman), who died in 1870.

Elizabeth Henrietta Craigie died aged 89 in September 1937

She is buried with her father, in the next grave to her mother.
