DEATH AND FUNERAL OF MR HARRY ELWORTHY. Our obituary records the death of Mr. Henri Elworthy, second son of Mr. Councillor Elworthy, a very promising and clever young man, who died on Thursday last, greatly esteemed by a large circle of friends.
For many years past be had suffered from Bright’s disease and other complaints, and his wonderful cheerfulness and buoyancy of spirits won the admiration of bis friends. A member of the St. Leonards Congregational Church, where his father had held the position of deacon for many years, young Mr. Elworthy had been a scholar in the Sunday School, and latterly a teacher and the secretary of the school. He was always ready for his Sunday School work, and took great interest in the services of the church. Everybody in the congregation admired and esteemed the bright young fellow.
He assisted his father in his office work, and was exceedingly clever as a draughtsman, and “well up” in the business of architect and surveyor.
For some time past he has been suffering from illness but the end was somewhat sudden. On Sunday he took his class in the school, and attended to his other duties; .. on Wednesday morning he had a severe fit, and after considerable suffering he passed away on Thursday evening, about five o’clock.
The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Borough Cemetery, in raw and drizzly weather. A short service was held in the Congregational Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. T. Towers, who spoke highly of the private character of his young friend and the valuable services he had rendered to the Church and Sandey School. ….. Mr. John Stuart, formerly superintendent of the Sunday School, made a special journey from Swansea to be present at the ceremony. The boys of Mr. Elworthy’s Sunday School class, and several of the elder scholars and teachers were also present. The coffin was covered with wreaths, baskets and sprays of flowers sent by friends and relatives.
