John Pryce Mackinnon

In 1863 Captain J. P. Mackinnon is secretary of the Royal Victoria Yacht. Club, Ryde, Isle of Wight, a post he was still holding in 1871.

At St. Clare, near Ryde, Isle of Wight, wife of John Pryce Mackinnon, esq.  Late 25th (King’s Own Borderers) a son.  [7th May 1805 - Having been ‘The Sussex Regiment’ since 1782, the Regiment is predesignated ‘The 25th (King’s Own Borderers) Regiment of Foot’ and becomes a Royal Regiment.]

In 1888 Captain John Pryce Mackinnon was boarding at 51 Gensing Road.  On a Thursday  he went to Boulogne, returning on the Saturday in the evening.

Next morning the landlord found him dead.  He had apparently felt unwell the previous evening and been driven to a chemist.


Hastings and St Leonards Observer - Saturday 06 October 1888
Arthur Ridout, 4, Castle-street, Hastings, gave evidence to the effect that had known deceased for twelve months, and that he was a retired officer the 72nd and 25th. had been living on an allowance made by his sister.  Witness last saw him alive the day before his death at a public-house in Queen's-road, Hastings. was then quite sober, and did not appear as though he were likely commit suicide.  His habits were very regular.......
