Friends of Hastings Cemetery

Hastings and St Leonards Observer - Saturday 14 January 1933
UNIQUE BUSINESS RECORD. SIX GENERATIONS IN THE MILK TRADE. DEATH MR. W. G. CHAPMAN.
The death of Mr. Walter George Chapman, which occurred last Friday at his home, 58, Silverlands-road, St. Leonards, severs another link of an almost unique business record.  For over 200 years, six generations of the Chapman family have been connected with the milk trade, and it is possible that an ancestor may have carried on business a dairyman as long ago as 1600.  Aged 76, Mr. Chapman had been in business as a dairyman at Silverhill for over fifty years, retiring about five years ago. He was the youngest son of the late Mr. Charles Chapman who, starting business by making a profit of 1d., built up a flourishing trade at North-street, St. Leonards, and a brother of the late Councillor Charles Chapman.  His mother [Ruth, nee Foord] was one of a family of ten children whose father lived in the service of the third Earl of Ashburnham for over fifty years.

Mr. Chapman leaves a widow, aged 78, and five sons. The funeral took place on Wednesday at the Borough Cemetery, Pastor Hoad officiating. The grave was beautifully lined with evergreens and flowers, a tribute from Mr. Arthur Towner to an old friend. The mourners included Mrs. Catherine Chapman (widow), Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Chapman, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Chapman, Mr. and Mrs. G. Chapman, Mr. and Mrs. F. Chapman, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Chapman (sons and daughters-in-law), Mrs. Hawkett (sister-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. C. Chapman (nephew and niece), Mrs. L. Buckland (niece), Mr. and Mrs. L. Davis (nephew and niece), and Mrs. T. H. Beere.

George Chapman was born at St Leonards in 1880, the son of a milkman, Walter Chapman, who had been born in the town in about 1857.  His mother, Catherine Chapman, came from Rye. The family lived in Gensing Road, off Norman Road. George had two elder brothers, Ernest Chapman and William Chapman, (both milkmen in 1891) and by 1891 three younger brothers: Frank, Albert (died in 1920, aged 36, and is buried with his parents at FC I07) and James Chapman.  In 1891 they were living at 20 Alma Villas.
