Alfred Newman Jinks was born in Hastings in 1896/7, the son of Sarah and William Newman Jinks. His father was a local man but his mother came from Kentish Town. Alfred had four older brothers, William Arthur, Henry John, Charles Edward and Frederick Waller and a sister, Mary. Two other siblings had died.
William Newman Jinks had a variety of jobs. In 1891 the family were living in the Gate House to the Hermitage (Old Roar/Harrow Lane area) and he was a gardener. By 1901 the family had moved to 25 Alma Terrace and William was a carpenter. Henry, Alfred’s oldest brother, was already at work at the age of 14 as a milk carrier, and his mother was working as a laundress/ironer.
By 1911 William was a house decorator and presumably had his own business, as he is described as an employer. Two of his sons, Charles and Frederick, may have worked for him as they are a paperhanger, and house painter, respectively. Mary was a tailoress, and no occupation was recorded for Sarah. The family now lived at 36 Alma Terrace. Alfred was no longer living at home – he was employed as a houseboy to a Mr Arthur Stewart Raikes at 11 Grosvenor Crescent, a retired minister of the Diplomatic Service. It was a large house and Alfred was one of three servants.
